Shangela, the stage name for Darius Jeremy “DJ” Pierce, a beloved figure among fans of “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” has been accused of rape in a civil lawsuit that was filed on Wednesday.

The lawsuit, which was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, claims that during the filming of the first season of his popular HBO show “We’re Here” in 2020, Pierce sexually assaulted Daniel McGarrigle, a former production assistant on the show.

McGarrigle, who is 39 years old, is seeking unspecified damages from Pierce, who is 42, and Buckingham Television, the production company behind the show.

According to the lawsuit, the alleged assault took place in a hotel room in Monroe, Louisiana, after a work-related party in February 2020.

Pierce reportedly provided McGarrigle with five shots of alcohol and two mixed drinks at the party and then invited him back to his hotel to help him pack for an early flight the following day.

The lawsuit describes an incident in which McGarrigle allegedly went to Pierce’s hotel room and ended up spending the night after feeling ill.

At some point during the night, McGarrigle claims he woke up with his pants down and poppers being poured on his face, and felt Pierce attempting to sexually assault him.

McGarrigle allegedly screamed and tried to fight Pierce off but felt weak. Pierce allegedly continued to assert that McGarrigle wanted the sexual encounter.

The lawsuit claims that McGarrigle did not report the assault immediately because he was afraid of losing his job, and he attempted to maintain a cordial relationship with Pierce until resigning from his role in the summer of 2021.

McGarrigle’s attorney, Daniel Gilleon, states that his client has been in contact with the Ruston Police Department since December but no charges have been filed yet.
