Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson have been exemplars of a bromance for a few decades now. The two have consistently appeared as kindred spirits, shining together in their numerous on-screen collaborations and maintaining a genuine closeness in real life. However, their exceptional bond may actually have a biological explanation.

The bromance between the actors can be traced back to 1997, just a few years before their first on-screen collaboration in EDtv. From there, they went on to work together in the movie Surfer, Dude (2008) and the TV series True Detective. It is worth noting that for the successful show, McConaughey personally requested that the director cast Harrelson in the second lead role, which proved to be a winning decision.

In addition to their professional relationship, Harrelson and McConaughey share a genuine friendship. Harrelson has mentioned that he takes “friendship tours” at least once a year, and McConaughey is frequently a part of these outings.

McConaughey confirms the depth of their friendship and even reveals that their families are also very close. He explains that the line between where he starts and Harrelson ends, and vice versa, has always been unclear, which is a significant aspect of their bromance. McConaughey goes on to share that his children refer to Harrelson as “Uncle Woody,” and in turn, Harrelson’s kids call him “Uncle Matthew.”

Their exceptional connection has prompted some interesting observations, with even those close to them noting the striking similarities between the two actors. McConaughey has shared that his family often mistakes pictures of Harrelson for him, while Harrelson’s family frequently confuses images of McConaughey for him.

Interestingly, there was a time when McConaughey’s mother had a connection with Harrelson’s father, shortly after her divorce from McConaughey’s father. During a conversation in Greece a few years ago, the friends were discussing their close relationship and their families when McConaughey’s mother revealed that she knew Harrelson’s father.

This revelation prompted the two actors to consider taking a DNA test to determine if they are actually biological brothers.

However, McConaughey admits to being somewhat hesitant to take the test, as it would mean potentially discovering that his father may not be his biological father after 53 years.

Despite McConaughey’s hesitance, Harrelson has been persistent in urging for a DNA test to confirm their relationship. During an appearance on The Late Show, Harrelson spoke about a conversation he had with McConaughey’s mother, Mary Kathlene McCabe, which led him to consider the possibility that he and McConaughey might be biological brothers.

Harrelson shared that during a conversation in Greece while watching the US team win the World Cup, he mentioned to McConaughey’s mother that he had regrets, to which she responded with a cryptic statement: “I knew… your father.” The ellipsis in her response was both troubling and interesting to Harrelson, leading him to believe that there might be some truth to the possibility that he and McConaughey are related.

Regardless of the outcome of a potential DNA test, McConaughey and Harrelson have stated that their relationship will not be affected. The two actors are now closer than ever, especially after working on their new series, Brother From Another Mother, which will delve into their families and explore their real-life dynamics.

McConaughey gave some insight into the show, describing it as a “love story” about their families coming together, complete with the conflicts and comedy that come with it. Despite being best friends, McConaughey and Harrelson have different parenting styles, which will be an interesting element to watch. It sounds like a show not to be missed!
